All Day Butte College Virtual Gallery- Paul Lewin (Multi-Day Event)
https://rebrand.ly/PaulLewinArtShow

I was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1973. I moved to the U.S. with my family in 1977 and spent most of my younger years growing up in Miami FL. In 2004 I moved to Oakland, CA. Art has been a part of my life from as far back as I can remember. My father was my first artistic influence. From a very young age I would assist him in various creative projects. My father was a great storyteller. I loved listening to his stories of the old country in Jamaica while we worked. He also taught me a lot about ancient societies, science, and history. My childhood home was filled with paintings, sculptures, and artifacts of many different cultures from around the world. These works, along with my love of sci-fi and fantasy art, inspired a lot of my early creativity.

Today my art is inspired by Afro Caribbean/ African folklore, nature and sci-fi. I’m primarily focused on storytelling; a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, dating back to ancient Africa. My intent is to create alternate worlds, with various elements of African and Afro Caribbean culture. The subjects in my work represent the ancestors. Ancient ancestors, futuristic ancestors, interdimensional ancestors, and all the other beings that inhabit the spirit world.

8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Political Unrest: Need Someone to Talk too?
Students, we understand that the political unrest in our country is a potential source of additional stress and anxiety.
A safe zoom space has been created where Counselors are here to talk to you about it.
Zoom Room ID 999 4972 4052
8:00 AM - 11:50 AM Race Zone
FLEX # 665
"Race Zone is an opportunity to learn about racism through the lens of people of color. There is a lot of pressure to understand racism but often we don't know where to start; and while many of us want to be an ally, we might not feel comfortable discussing some of the prominent issues. Race Zone is a brief overview and discussion about racism in America and how it shows up at Butte College by examining topics such as implicit bias and white privilege. Come and gain a deeper familiarity with vocabulary, inclusive practices, and an understanding of privilege that will help you identify ways YOU can foster an inclusive environment that strives to be anti-racist."

9:00 AM - 10:20 AM (Cancelled) The Shadow of the Black Hole
FLEX # 155
In this workshop, I will talk about the mysterious black holes, an esoteric scientific idea that has so strongly captured the public imagination and became deeply rooted into pop culture. I will explain how astronomers are so sure that black holes are real, even if we cannot observe them directly, and tackle common misconceptions about them. Lastly, I will talk about how a large international collaboration of astronomers succeeded in observing what happens just outside the “event horizon” of a black hole, thanks to an array made of individual telescopes working together as a single Earth-sized telescope. This discovery is a powerful metaphor of the fact that any difficulty can be overcome if people work together to reach their common goal.

10:00 AM - 11:50 AM What is White Language Supremacy and How to Respond
FLEX # 666
This workshop will provide a space for participants to brainstorm anti-racist alternatives to practices that maintain White language supremacy at Butte College. We’ll start by looking at how local White American language preferences become the invisible norm for what counts as acceptable language use in educational spaces and how this creates the need for code-switching. We’ll examine the major impacts on students of having to code-switch, reflect on our own journeys and experiences with white language supremacy, and examine other impacts of white language supremacy on all of us. Then, we’ll brainstorm ways we can combat white language supremacy in different disciplines and areas of the college.
11:00 AM - 11:50 AM Creativity in the Covid Classroom
FLEX # 460
For the fall semester, Tommy's class had asynchronous lectures. For these lecture videos, Tommy filmed myself completing the notes via pencil and paper, while also filming his body language (facial expressions, hand movement, etc) via. separate camera. Then he edited and synched both of the films to provide an almost complete lecture video for students to watch while also simultaneously taking notes. Tommy felt this was a creative approach to the Covid classroom - so in what ways have you developed creative solutions to challenges in the Covid Classroom? Come prepared to her about new creative ideas as well as share some creative solutions of your own!

12:00 PM - 12:50 PM (Cancelled) Exploring Trauma and Ways of Healing
FLEX # 550
Our community has suffered multiple traumas in the past two years. Many faculty and staff members have lost their homes, their jobs, and some have lost family members and friends during the COVID Pandemic. Nothing is normal. Everything is unprecedented. Forest fires reignited Camp Fire trauma, and Black people and BIPOC students and staff are triggered by the continued killings of unarmed black men and women. The racial reckoning in this country seems far from satisfactory. And yet humans have the ability to move trauma and stress through their bodies. We can heal ourselves. This workshop will give you some tools and ideas of how to deal with the stress in your body, based on ideas from the books, "My Grandmother's Hands", Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending our Hearts and Bodies, by Resmaa Menakem, and "Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle" by Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski.
