I was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1973. I moved to the U.S. with my family in 1977 and spent most of my younger years growing up in Miami FL. In 2004 I moved to Oakland, CA. Art has been a part of my life from as far back as I can remember. My father was my first artistic influence. From a very young age I would assist him in various creative projects. My father was a great storyteller. I loved listening to his stories of the old country in Jamaica while we worked. He also taught me a lot about ancient societies, science, and history. My childhood home was filled with paintings, sculptures, and artifacts of many different cultures from around the world. These works, along with my love of sci-fi and fantasy art, inspired a lot of my early creativity.

Today my art is inspired by Afro Caribbean/ African folklore, nature and sci-fi. I’m primarily focused on storytelling; a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, dating back to ancient Africa. My intent is to create alternate worlds, with various elements of African and Afro Caribbean culture. The subjects in my work represent the ancestors. Ancient ancestors, futuristic ancestors, interdimensional ancestors, and all the other beings that inhabit the spirit world.

8:00 AM - 8:50 AM Trends from States to Bands: What Happens When We Lose Our Common Ground
FLEX # 154
Anthropology provides a broad and deep perspective that can help us predict what happens when there's a shift from the way things have been. Cultures adapt in fairly predictable ways. Explore major trends across the continuum of the types of political systems that cultures use to organize their societies. This presentation will set the stage to explore what it means for common ground when the economic system of a culture, and of global capitalism, downshifts.
8:30 AM - 11:20 AM Associate Faculty Orientation*
FLEX # 8
This session is developed primarily for new associate faculty. All associate faculty are welcome and can benefit from this workshop. Don’t miss a wonderful opportunity to gain critical information that can decrease new instructor stress! 9:00 AM - 10:20 AM Academic Senate CTE Caucus
FLEX # 950.3
The CTE Caucus is a new idea from the Academic Senate Exec. We hope to build a stronger CTE faculty voice in shared governance, to inform faculty on initiatives, committees, and task forces impacting CTE areas, and to identify issues of common concern. We hope that this time during FLEX Week will be friendly to your schedules and allow you to engage with the Senate in a new and effective way.
9:00 AM - 10:20 AM Finding the Story in Your Equity Data
FLEX # 664
One of the biggest challenges associated with analyzing equity data is the sheer volume of metrics that have to be considered. With so many metrics it can be difficult to find the story or stories that promote action. This session will provide participants with a new framework for modeling the student inequities and novel way to examine equity data that can reveal the pathways to action.
9:00 AM - 10:20 AM Race Conversations
FLEX # 660.2
"Yes, let’s talk about race, racism, and Butte! This will be a 1.5-hour meeting via zoom with you and up to 11 other Butte friends with an exercise recommended by the USC Race and Equity Center calls, “Race Taboos”.How it works: Prior to our meeting, all participants will submit 1 question about race that you want to pose to attendees. Questions will be entered into a randomizer wheel which will select questions to discuss. The group will not know who wrote the question we are discussing. We are looking for honest race questions (professional or personal) that can lead to true understanding and change when it comes to race and racism on campus. Examples of questions discussed:
· What does systemic racism look like at Butte?
· Tell us about a time you saw racism on campus and ignored it.
· What does “all lives matter” mean to you?
RSVP please email bernalwoodli@butte.edu Seats are limited to 12 people per session. Race Conversations is a safe space for healthy race conversations and is open to all Butte employees and students, so please come and join us!"
