What is White Language Supremacy and How to Respond
Start Date: 1/21/2021Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 1/21/2021End Time: 11:50 AM
Event Description:
FLEX # 666
This workshop will provide a space for participants to brainstorm anti-racist alternatives to practices that maintain White language supremacy at Butte College. We’ll start by looking at how local White American language preferences become the invisible norm for what counts as acceptable language use in educational spaces and how this creates the need for code-switching. We’ll examine the major impacts on students of having to code-switch, reflect on our own journeys and experiences with white language supremacy, and examine other impacts of white language supremacy on all of us. Then, we’ll brainstorm ways we can combat white language supremacy in different disciplines and areas of the college.
