All Day Butte College Virtual Gallery- Paul Lewin (Multi-Day Event)

I was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1973. I moved to the U.S. with my family in 1977 and spent most of my younger years growing up in Miami FL. In 2004 I moved to Oakland, CA. Art has been a part of my life from as far back as I can remember. My father was my first artistic influence. From a very young age I would assist him in various creative projects. My father was a great storyteller. I loved listening to his stories of the old country in Jamaica while we worked. He also taught me a lot about ancient societies, science, and history. My childhood home was filled with paintings, sculptures, and artifacts of many different cultures from around the world. These works, along with my love of sci-fi and fantasy art, inspired a lot of my early creativity.

Today my art is inspired by Afro Caribbean/ African folklore, nature and sci-fi. I’m primarily focused on storytelling; a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, dating back to ancient Africa. My intent is to create alternate worlds, with various elements of African and Afro Caribbean culture. The subjects in my work represent the ancestors. Ancient ancestors, futuristic ancestors, interdimensional ancestors, and all the other beings that inhabit the spirit world.

9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Physics of Running
FLEX # 152
When we compare ourselves with other animals, we often think of humans as weak and physically inferior. We lack razor sharp teeth. We are not very fast. We don’t use claws. We don’t even run on four legs to chase game (“four legs good, two legs bad”). But human beings possess one physical ability that no other land animal has—the ability to run very long distances in one go. The human body is uniquely adapted to run at a steady pace in all kinds of climates for a long time. Our binocular vision helps us navigate. Sweat glands keep us cool. Our feet and legs are adapted for steady long-term running. Like walking, no one teaches you to run. The ability and tendency are hardwired into your DNA. The physics of running involves forces, torques, oscillations, levers, thermodynamics, momentum, and energy transformation. This workshop will examine the physics of human locomotion and what it is that makes us all natural runners.
10:00 AM - 10:50 AM White Supremacy and Me - Book Group
FLEX # 662
Saad's book “is a one-of-a-kind personal anti-racism tool structured to help people with white privilege understand and take ownership of their participation in the oppressive system of white supremacy.” This workshop is for white identified colleagues to learn more about the book and the white racial identity learning groups on campus. Small groups meet weekly through the semester to read, journal and discuss topics from the Layla Saad’s book. We welcome interest and questions from POC folks on campus too!
11:00 AM - 11:50 AM 10 Metrics Every Butte Employee Should Know

California Community colleges today are awash in data metrics. But there a small number of core institutional metrics that provide the context for nearly all the others. In this session will walk through each of these core metrics and discuss why they are important.
