I was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1973. I moved to the U.S. with my family in 1977 and spent most of my younger years growing up in Miami FL. In 2004 I moved to Oakland, CA. Art has been a part of my life from as far back as I can remember. My father was my first artistic influence. From a very young age I would assist him in various creative projects. My father was a great storyteller. I loved listening to his stories of the old country in Jamaica while we worked. He also taught me a lot about ancient societies, science, and history. My childhood home was filled with paintings, sculptures, and artifacts of many different cultures from around the world. These works, along with my love of sci-fi and fantasy art, inspired a lot of my early creativity.

Today my art is inspired by Afro Caribbean/ African folklore, nature and sci-fi. I’m primarily focused on storytelling; a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, dating back to ancient Africa. My intent is to create alternate worlds, with various elements of African and Afro Caribbean culture. The subjects in my work represent the ancestors. Ancient ancestors, futuristic ancestors, interdimensional ancestors, and all the other beings that inhabit the spirit world.

9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Stairway to the Heavens: A Space Elevator
FLEX # 150
The recent successful launch of NASA astronauts aboard an American rocket has sparked a renewed interest in human spaceflight here in the U.S. But using rockets is expensive, dirty, and dangerous. Are there safer and cheaper ways of putting people up there? Yes. One is to use a space tether or space elevator—a large permanent structure tens of thousands of miles long that could routinely shuttle people up and down just like they were inside a skyscraper. As kooky as it seems, this idea has been around for over a century. It has also been a major plot element in many science fiction novels, and a space tether is shown in the dramatic opening scene of Brad Pitt’s recent film "Ad Astra". The physical principles are easy to understand and much of the engineering expertise required to build such a structure does exist. This workshop will examine the basic physics of this weird idea, how we might build such an elevator, what it would cost, and how we could use it.

We are looking for honest race questions (professional or personal) that can lead to true understanding and change when it comes to race and racism on campus. Examples of questions discussed:
· What does systemic racism look like at Butte?
· Tell us about a time you saw racism on campus and ignored it.
· What does “all lives matter” mean to you?
