Physics of Running
Start Date: 1/15/2021Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Date: 1/15/2021End Time: 10:50 AM
Event Description:
FLEX # 152
When we compare ourselves with other animals, we often think of humans as weak and physically inferior. We lack razor sharp teeth. We are not very fast. We don’t use claws. We don’t even run on four legs to chase game (“four legs good, two legs bad”). But human beings possess one physical ability that no other land animal has—the ability to run very long distances in one go. The human body is uniquely adapted to run at a steady pace in all kinds of climates for a long time. Our binocular vision helps us navigate. Sweat glands keep us cool. Our feet and legs are adapted for steady long-term running. Like walking, no one teaches you to run. The ability and tendency are hardwired into your DNA. The physics of running involves forces, torques, oscillations, levers, thermodynamics, momentum, and energy transformation. This workshop will examine the physics of human locomotion and what it is that makes us all natural runners.
