9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Microwaves Will Not Make You Sterile
FLEX # 105
Microwaves are everywhere—there’s no escaping them—for the simple reason that they are safe and very useful.  The development of microwave technology has a fascinating history.  For example, it played a vital role in our fight against the Axis in World War II.  Since then, microwave technology has helped us track the weather, navigate the oceans, detect dangerous tumors, and communicate with one another anywhere on Earth.  This workshop will examine the physical properties of microwaves and how they can be used to solve various problems.  Participants will use generators to show that microwaves are a form of light.  We will study the common uses of microwaves (cooking, communication, meteorology) and the not so common (Havana syndrome).  If you ever cared about how your oven is able to quickly cook food or how you are able to talk instantly with someone on the other side of the planet, then this workshop is for you.  And, no, microwaves will not make you sterile!
10:00 AM - 10:50 AM Identity Affirming Strategies for the Classroom
FLEX # 666
Classrooms and colleges often privilege a single dominant identity, forcing marginalized students to diminish themselves. Discriminatory college experiences may leave some students wondering if school is for them. For instance, students attempting to change their names to align with their identity while attending Butte may find themselves facing issues in the classroom that can impact their personal safety and contribute to a decline in mental health. But our classrooms can be identity-affirming spaces where students are respected and validated while keeping safety and privacy as a primary consideration. The question is, how can instructors and Butte College contribute to fostering such an environment in and out of the classroom? Participants will leave this one-hour presentation with an understanding of the importance of the Chosen Name Project and how inclusive Open Educational Resources (OER) content and other campus resources can be used to advocate for and help students in an identity affirming way as they navigate the college classroom and bureaucracies of Butte College.

FLEX # 407
First impressions are important!  The homepage is the first thing a student sees in our course. So, how can we build a homepage that leaves an excellent first impression? And, how do we create an introductory module that engages students and sets them on the path to success? Join us for a round table discussion. We will share what has worked for us and encourage participants to share successes and challenges.
12:00 PM - 12:50 PM What is Critical Race Theory?
FLEX # 667
Critical Race Theory has received a lot of attention lately, so we should learn exactly what it is and what it isn't. This session will cover some of the elements of critical race theory and a bit about how it came to be a focus of state legislators. The facilitator, Andrew Lavin, has a PhD in philosophy and teaches Philosophy of Race at Chico State. He will share some of the insights, contentions, and approaches of the Critical Race Theory framework from canonical sources like Derrick Bell, Kimberle Crenshaw, Richard Delgado, Linda Martin Alcoff, and other legal scholars and philosophers working in CRT.
