9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Ice Cold: The Miracle of Refrigeration
FLEX # 102
Refrigeration has revolutionized human existence.  The ability to keep food cold has eliminated many problems associated with foodborne illnesses while enhancing the human diet, allowing us access to foods from anywhere.  Air conditioning, a type of refrigeration, is a godsend—imagine living in the Central Valley in summer without it.  Both technologies take advantage of an interesting physical phenomenon called “adiabatic cooling”.  This workshop will demonstrate the basic physical concepts of cooling and examine the simple engineering that goes into making refrigerators and air conditioners.  We’ll also look at some rather exotic (and surprising) forms of cooling that will become more common in the future.  We’ll discuss the benefits as well as the environmental effects of refrigeration.  Finally, we’ll delve into some of the history of keeping things cold: from ancient emperors ordering slaves to haul ice down from the mountains in summertime to the American entrepreneur, Frederic Tudor, who made a killing shipping huge slabs of pond ice from New England all the way around the world to India.

11:00 AM - 11:50 AM Anti-Racism in American History - The Life of Benjamin Lay
FLEX # 103
White people often think that anti-racism work is not for us. However, the practice of anti-racism by white people can be found throughout America's history. Benjamin Lay, a white Englishman who stood barely over four feet tall, may be the greatest abolitionist you've never heard of! He was one of our nation’s first "radicals" to argue for an end to slavery. In this workshop, I will share with you the story of his life, his beliefs, and how he practiced anti-racism in 18th century America.

We’ll cover the basics and show you how to get to the data no one should go without for making data-informed decisions. Questions are also welcome, so if you have basic questions like, “How do I make multiple selections in a dashboard?” or want answers to more esoteric questions like, “Why doesn’t the 320 match the CCCCO Data Mart?”, or “What the heck is a WSCH and do I get 3 of them?” you’ll get the answers you need.

3:00 PM - 3:50 PM Introduction to Mnemonics: Peg Mnemonics
FLEX # 104
Mnemonic systems are strategies any one can learn and use to remember more. We often wish that we had a better memory: We'd be less forgetful; we'd learn more things; and we would be better at our jobs. The good new is that we can all improve our memories by using time-tested and evidence-based mnemonic strategies. 'Mental athletes' may astound us by their impressive memory feats, like memorizing decks of playing cards quickly, long lists of words or numbers, or reciting page after page of text verbatim. They will all tell you, however, that they don't have a special memory; they simply use mnemonics. And you can too. In this session, we'll cover the Peg Mnemonic technique, a quickly learned technique you can put to immediate use in your daily life and in the classroom.
