8:30 AM - 11:20 AM Bias Awareness Training
FLEX # 324.1
This is a great chance for everyone to refresh/recertify or receive their initial EEO Training. The training is good for two years, and the EEO Plan contemplates EEO Training prior to serving on a hiring committee. Again, this is a convenient way to stay ahead and be involved in upcoming hiring committees. We really encourage everyone to take advantage of this great opportunity.

9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Really, Really Bad Science Fiction Cinema
FLEX # 114
Good science fiction cinema creates plausible imaginary worlds (often futuristic) in which new scientific discoveries or technological developments significantly alter society. The creator fashions a believable setting in which their characters adapt to these new developments and confront the inevitable problems that arise. Bad science fiction has none of this. Some science fiction films are simply stupid or crude because of poor direction or terrible writing. Some films are bad because the director expects us to swallow preposterous scenarios that defy common sense (think zombies). A handful of science fiction films, however, are so bad that they are both comical and instructive. The contrast between what we see on the screen and what constitutes actual science is so stark that it provides an effective way to illustrate to students what real science is…and what it is not. This workshop examines several recent films that purport to be serious science fiction. Films like "The Core", "Moonfall", "Armageddon", "The Day After Tomorrow", "San Andreas", "Battlefield Earth", "10.0 Earthquake", and "2012" contain little of anything resembling science. We’ll poke fun at these films and see how we can use them to help students understand actual science. The presenter is no film critic, but merely someone who understands science and appreciates good science fiction cinema. No background, obviously, is required.

9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Who Will Make the Bread?
FLEX # 115
Do you remember the story of the Little Red Hen? One day, she found a seed and discovered “it was a Wheat Seed and that, if planted, it would grow up and when ripe it could be made into flour and then into bread.” There were many steps in the process, and she got little help from the pig, the cat, and the rat. Come help the “Little Red Hen” in this hands-on workshop. We will learn a little about wheat, then work together to thresh, mill, and bake our seeds (and yes, there will be some eating in the end). Please note, this will not be a gluten free environment.
