9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Batteries Included
FLEX # 106
Batteries are an indelible part of modern life; they’re everywhere. These simple power supplies are the result of over two centuries of theory, experimentation, and refinement. All batteries work using the same idea: combine two different metals together with an electrolytic solution. The creation of the first battery arose from an argument between two Italian scientists in the 1790s—Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta—about the correct cause for how a dead frog’s legs can be made to twitch. Batteries revolutionized the study of electricity since they provided scientists with reliable and continuous sources of electric current. Today, batteries can power virtually anything, from myriad handheld electronic devices to two-and-a-half-ton electric cars. This workshop will explain how batteries work. Attendees will also have the chance to build their own simple batteries using commonly available materials. We’ll also explore what the future may hold for these power supplies. No background is needed.

Now that many of us are back in F2F classes, what is the role of our Canvas Orientation Module? The AC ⚡DC (Adaptable Course Design Committee) is focused on how we can make all our courses adaptable and flexible, so our students can continue to learn during personal and community interruptions. How do we create an orientation module that engages students and sets them on the path to success, whether they are attending in person, or catching up online? We will focus on strategies that you can incorporate this semester and share several examples of orientation modules that you can adapt for your own courses. Please join us for a round table discussion to share successes, challenges and solutions.

11:00 AM - 12:50 PM Ice Cores: Climate Change in Butte County
FLEX # 107
Researchers and scientists regularly head to the polar regions of the world (Greenland, Antarctica) to collect snow and ice core samples. Scientists use chemical instruments to measure the trace amounts of chemical species in these snow and ice samples to get a better understanding of the atmosphere in both the present and the past. Two-mile deep ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica allow scientists to peer back into the past, going back hundreds of thousands of years into the history of Earth’s atmosphere and climate. The knowledge of how the Earth’s atmosphere and climate have been linked in the past allows us to better understand how current changes to the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere will impact the global climate. Before coming to Butte, Dr. Tommy Cox worked in ice core research for more than a decade, with numerous ventures to both Greenland and the Antarctic. Join Dr. Cox as we follow him on a two-mile “time machine” to better understand the past in hopes of predicting our future climate – particularly as it applies to California’s current mega-drought and Butte County’s ever growing fire season.

2:00 PM - 2:50 PM Mnemonics Part III
FLEX # 103.3
Would you like to improve your memory? Mnemonic systems are strategies that anyone can learn and use to remember more. We often wish we had a better memory: we’d be less forgetful; we’d learn more things; we’d be more effective in our courses; and retain more of our lives. The good news is that we can all improve our memories by using time-tested and evidence-based mnemonic strategies. “Mental athletes” may astound us by their impressive feats of memory, like memorizing decks of playing cards quickly, long lists of words or numbers, or reciting pages after page of texts verbatim. They will all tell you, however, that they don’t have a special memory – they simply use mnemonics. And you can too! In this series of workshops, you will learn a number of mnemonic techniques you can apply immediately to improve your memory. This series will cover three systems – the Peg (introductory) and Phonetic (advanced) Systems, in addition to learning how to memorize names and faces.
