How well are students doing on meeting our Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)? In this session, we will discuss Butte’s results from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). We will look at what the survey results tell us and discuss what we can do (and are already doing) to help students meet these goals. In the next session, we will compare these results to student achievement of ILOs as reported by faculty.

9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Games of Chance, Medical Tests & Everyday Life
FLEX # 165
Life is uncertain.  We grapple with this all the time, worrying about odds, chances, probabilities, risks, stakes, and…luck.  Probability has a firm mathematical foundation, and it finds application among a host of fields like gaming, medical testing, insurance, weather forecasting, genetics, retailing, finance, and politics.  Much of the probability that affects our daily lives is quite simple to understand.  This workshop gives an overview of probability, how it developed within the mathematics community, and how we use it in our modern world.  We’ll see how betting odds are computed, how actuaries develop life tables, how medical researchers judge the effectiveness of medical tests, and how meteorologists conduct weather forecasting.  We’ll learn how to interpret statements like, “My odds are 4 to 3 against winning this game.”, “Your test came back positive, and there is a sixty-three percent chance that you have the disease.”, and “A fifty-year old female has a 1 in 34 chance of dying in a car accident over the next five years.”.  Go ahead…take a chance and attend.  No background required.
10:00 AM - 10:50 AM Dialog Days II: Faculty View of students’ ILO Achievement
FLEX # 164
How well are students doing on meeting our Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)? In this session, we will discuss the results of Faculty Reflections on how well students are meeting the ILOs.

We will look at what the survey results tell us and discuss what we can do (and are already doing) to help students meet these goals. We will also compare these results to student achievement of ILOs as reported by students.

10:00 AM - 10:50 AM Intermediate Excel Functions: If(), Countifs(), Sumifs(), Vlookup(), Xlookup(), Iferror().
FLEX # 453
Participants should have a basic understanding of Excel and spreadsheet architecture before taking this course.  Take your excel knowledge beyond basic record keeping, manual filtering and repeatedly copying and pasting with some of Excel's most adaptable and foundational functions. During the course of an hour we will explore the syntax and application of the following functions: IF(); COUNTIFS(); SUMIFS(); VLOOOKUP(); XLOOKUP(); and IFERROR().  Discussions will also introduce the concept of dynamic ranges as a strategy for amplified efficiency and making the most out of your new found excel skills.  Participants will leave with an enhanced understanding of Excel's capabilities and be armed with new strategies to grow their effective use of one of the world's most widely used data analytics tool kits.
10:00 AM - 10:50 AM (Cancelled) Supporting Survivors of Interpersonal Violence
FLEX # 555
Staff and faculty play vital roles in supporting our students, and we all have the power to make a positive difference in our campus community. Students who have experienced interpersonal violence encounter unique challenges when pursuing their education. Additionally, students who are 18-24 years old are at an increased risk for experiencing sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking. Experiencing intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual assault places has shown to contribute to lower academic achievement. This workshop will be focused on the impacts of interpersonal violence in our college community and trauma-informed strategies to supporting our students who are survivors.
11:00 AM - 11:50 AM What is AI? AI and Ethical Issues
FLEX # 166
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn like humans. This technology encompasses a wide range of applications, from simple tasks like filtering spam emails to more complex ones like self-driving cars and interpreting medical data. Alongside its growth, AI has raised significant ethical issues, especially in fields like education. Concerns include the potential for AI-generated work to be considered plagiarism, and the ethical implications of students using AI to complete assignments, effectively amounting to cheating. These issues highlight the need for clear guidelines and ethical standards in educational settings to address the responsible use of AI. As AI continues to advance, addressing these challenges is essential for ensuring its ethical and equitable application in all sectors, including education.

1:00 PM - 1:50 PM Integrating AI Tools in Teaching
FLEX # 167
The integration of AI tools in teaching is revolutionizing educational methodologies. AI can personalize learning experiences, adapt resources to suit individual learner needs, and provide real-time feedback, which enhances the learning process. For instance, AI-powered analytics can identify areas where students struggle, allowing educators to tailor their teaching approaches accordingly. AI tools also streamline administrative tasks, enabling teachers to focus more on classroom engagement and less on paperwork. As the education sector continues to embrace AI, it is vital for educators to stay informed about these tools and understand how to effectively incorporate them into their teaching strategies.
