A continental breakfast will also be provided.
12:00 PM - 12:50 PM Checking in & Following Up: What language do we use when we reach out to students that miss class / have missing work?
FLEX # 155
Do you check in with students who miss class or fail to turn in an assignment? If you do, you may have experienced students not responding to your message, or promising to complete work but then not doing it. What if you could get better results? While we don't have all the answers, this session will include a short presentation on strategies used by teachers with good results, as well as a round table discussion of the language different faculty members use when reaching out to students who have missed class or an assignment.
12:00 PM - 1:50 PM Committee Chairs Summit
FLEX # 385
Join us for an opportunity to gain knowledge and resources to support the wonderful work of your college committee. You will also be able to network with other committee chairs and share strategies surrounding the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and students to serve on committees.
12:00 PM - 12:50 PM The Liquid Syllabus: Fostering Inclusion from the First Click
FLEX # 657
Humans are social creatures. As such, each situation is processed through one’s past experiences. In college, many students, particularly those with minoritized social identities (BIPOC, LGBTQ, disabled, neurodiverse, non-native speakers of English) are more likely to question whether they belong at the start of a new course. A Liquid Syllabus is a humanizing strategy mitigates belongingness uncertainty by sending cues of care, support, and transparency. It is a public, mobile-responsive website topped with a warm, friendly instructor welcome video that demystifies important class details, positions you as a learning partner, and prepares students for a successful first week. This session will feature Butte faculty who are using a Liquid Syllabus and give you the opportunity to participate in a community of practice this spring to learn how to create your own.
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Safe Zone I
FLEX # 659
The Safe Zone training at Butte is a 3-hour introductory training that invites participants to learn about LGBTQ+ issues, provide resources, and create a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff exploring issues of sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression. Your Safe Zone certification expires every two years. This is because terminology and queer culture changes and also because we're all learning. We can always use updating and practice! Join us.
1:00 PM - 1:50 PM The Fall of the Roman Republic and its Lessons for Us
FLEX # 150
In 49 BCE, Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon River and inaugurated a Civil War in Rome, which is what most people understand is the end of the Roman Republic. However, the decline of the Roman Republic had begun much earlier, as early as 147 BCE. This FLEX presentation will explore the decline of the Roman Republic in detail, beyond Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon. The Romans cry out to us today, and this story has much for us to learn in a time when our own Republic is enduring challenges of a similar nature.
1:00 PM - 1:50 PM What Are They Doing Differently? Practices of English Composition Teachers with High Student Success and Equity for Black & Latine Students
FLEX # 658
In Fall 2019, a statewide report showed that Butte College's English Department had the lowest equity rate for Black students in English Composition in the state. Yet some Butte College teachers consistently have good results for this group, as well as for Latine students and for students overall. I wanted to know why. So last spring, I looked at data for over 15,000 Butte students who took English Composition between Fall 2017 and Fall 2022. I also interviewed 11 of the 57 faculty members who had taught English Composition during this timeframe, and I audited 10 of their Canvas courses. I found that there were five areas where teachers with high and equitable student success rates were doing things differently than teachers with lower and inequitable success rates. I also found that these teachers had different beliefs about Black & Latine students and about themselves. While I focused on English Composition in this study, the successful practices and beliefs are relevant for many if not all disciplines.
2:00 PM - 3:50 PM Chemical Hygiene Basics
FLEX # 551
This introductory course is required for all who use chemicals in instructional laboratories settings (science instructors and support personnel). If you have not attended a Butte College Chemical Hygiene basics class before, this class is for you.
