9:00 AM - 10:20 AM Academic Freedom - Part 2
FLEX # 156
This session is a follow-up to Part 1, “Academic Freedom: A Brief History,” offered last August. Part 2 will open with a quick review of the meaning of Academic Freedom and rationales. 9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Transistors: The Heart of Our Virtual World
FLEX # 157
The virtual world we inhabit exists because of a little device invented in 1947. Back then, vacuum tubes ruled the electronic world. They were at the heart of every useful electronic device: radios, televisions, radar, stereo systems, and computers. They had one nagging issue, however—they wasted a ton of energy. Anyone can go online today and download huge amounts of information in the blink of an eye because of the successful replacement for the vacuum tube: the solid-state transistor. Transistors are basically switches; they give engineers exquisite control over the circuits that they build, allowing for high computation speeds, processing, and the delivering of data, all with very high reliability at low cost. Computers are so much more powerful and reliable today than they were twenty years ago because scientists have continually found ways to make transistors smaller and smaller. Apple’s new M1 Ultra computer chip, for example, contains over one hundred billion transistors, all on a silicon chip less than two inches long on a side. This workshop will give one a basic understanding of the transistor, why it is important, and how it makes a computer chip do its job. No background is needed.
9:00 AM - 9:50 AM Using Video for Assignments and Feedback in Canvas
FLEX # 452
Canvas Studio gives students the option to record audio and video media to complete assignments directly from the Rich Text Editor. Recording audio and video feedback comments can also be a powerful way for faculty to provide meaningful and actionable feedback to students while fostering connections with our students. In this Flex session, we'll create a simple assignment that asks students to record a media submission, and we'll explore options for faculty to record media feedback comments using Studio and TechSmith SnagIt (which faculty can access via license from TMI).
10:00 AM - 10:50 AM African American Transfer Tipping Point Presentation Statement of Work
FLEX # 660
This presentation will focus on providing attendees with information and practical strategies to better support African American/Black students’ success at Butte College. We will share results from the African American Transfer Tipping Point study, a research project designed to determine the factors that impact African American/Black students' likelihood of transferring and why such factors are salient to the African American/Black student experience. We plan to structure the session to support meaning-making and help participants identify ways in which the information presented can be leveraged in their own role to support Black student success. We will include polls where we will ask attendees a variety of questions related to their knowledge and experiences. The session will be designed in a way to ensure participants leave not just with new information about the factors that impact the trajectories of transfer-motivated African American/Black students but actions they can take to support the transfer trajectories of such students.

The pilot, focusing on two of BC’s five communities of interest, began in spring 2023 and scaled in the Fall to all five Communities of Interest. Adhering to the Guided Pathways principle of focusing on the students who need it most the Student Success Teams use real time student data to identify the right students at the right time.  This workshop will provide an overview of staff and faculty roles and actions, student intervention delivery, and early students outcomes.
