Event Description: FLEX # 114
In this workshop, I will talk about the mysterious black holes, an esoteric scientific idea that has so strongly captured the public imagination and became deeply rooted into pop culture. I will explain how astronomers are so sure that black holes are real, even if we cannot observe them directly, and tackle common misconceptions about them. Lastly, I will talk about how a large international collaboration of astronomers succeeded in observing what happens just outside the “event horizon” of a black hole, thanks to an array made of individual telescopes working together as a single Earth sized telescope. This discovery is a powerful metaphor of the fact that any difficulty can be overcome if people work together to reach their common goal.
