10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Mindfulness Practices for Resilient Living, Happiness, and Well-Being
FLEX # 507
10-10:50am. We are at a point in history where the enormous stress of a pandemic and all of its reach is common ground. Never before have we all been experiencing some measure of the exact same thing. We also share the commonality of a deep need for managing the stress and navigating the new territory presented by C19. Mindfulness practice is a particular form of mental training and a particular kind of attention to bring to daily living. Together, these lead to two important outcomes: reductions in reactivity (how much of our day is and our stress is due to our reactivity to persons, places, things, or situations?) and the cultivation of positive brain states (equanimity, compassion, patience, generosity, ease). In this workshop I will present some of the research around mindfulness and well-being (over 7,000 studies in the past several years), how the science applies to our practical experience. A practical lesson will be included
as a pragmatic take-away from the workshop.

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Space Crap
FLEX # 108
1-2:50pm. Satellites orbiting Earth provide a wealth of benefits from weather tracking and global communications to satellite radio and television and of course…spying. There are currently over one thousand active satellites in orbit around the planet. However, the quirks of orbital behavior mean that much of what we place up there stays up there. There are over two thousand defunct satellites still in orbit and thousands more pieces of assorted junk including things like nose cones, broken solar panels, electrical cords, paint chips, and various other bits of crap that continue to orbit Earth and pose collisional risks to healthy satellites and space probes. This situation is about to get much worse. Elon Musk, for example, is determined to provide internet broadband to the remote masses by using a fleet of very small satellites. His company plans to launch thousands of these things over the next few years in hopes of providing truly global broadband coverage. Others are sure to follow, so that in the next few decades the night sky will no longer be dark, but rather a kaleidoscope of blinking lights, massive orbiting billboards, and holographic sky images to keep us entertained no matter where we go or where we look. This workshop will explain the basics of orbital behavior and why this problem is not easy to solve. It will also show some of what scientists and engineers
hope to do to preserve terrestrial astronomy and the simple human joy of admiring the dark night sky. No scientific or mathematical background is required.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Tips for Effective Communication in an Online Course
FLEX # 109
2-2:50pm. Regular and effective contact is a requirement for an online course because of its importance. It helps humanize your course, improves engagement and success, and helps bridge equity gaps. Consistent communication from the instructor helps to establish a routine that encourages students to stay on track in an online course. The workshop focuses on techniques for when and how to effectively communicate with students at critical points in your course: before the course begins, as students orient to your course, and routinely throughout the semester. Tips for helping students to interact with each other will also be discussed. Template messages and pages, Canvas tricks, and an example communication plan will be shared. I plan to present this in a Zoom session format that can be recorded. I will create templates to share, both message scripts and Canvas page/announcements, so we can talk about how to best distribute those to interested faculty.
