9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Your Tax Dollars at Work… (Really)
FLEX # 106
No one likes paying taxes and let’s face it—a lot of that money is spent on things of dubious value. The National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA), however, is one of the most cost-effective and productive agencies ever created. The Hubble Space Telescope, for example, cost a measly one billion dollars. The scientific advances and technological processes arising from that single project have paid enormous dividends over the three decades since its construction. NASA’s annual budget is a paltry $23 billion, an amount of money our government will spend to build just two aircraft carriers. This workshop will examine how and why NASA was formed, its mission, its impact on both science and industry, and how it plans to meet the challenges of the future.

11:00 AM - 11:50 AM 10 Metrics Every Butte Employee Should Know
FLEX # 358
California Community colleges today are awash in data metrics. The total volume of metrics captured in our various Butte College dashboards and reports number well over a thousand making it often difficult to see the forest for the trees. But there a small number of core institutional metrics that provide the context for nearly all the others. In this session will walk through each of these core metrics and discuss why they are important.

Following the overview – a round table invitation to discuss what we can do as college professionals to support students facing food and housing insecurities. 12:00 PM - 12:50 PM Managing Your Knowledge
FLEX # 107
"Bridging the gap between archiving information and finding it again: This flex presentation will demonstrate the neural linking techniques of the innovative app called Obsidian which enables users to create a Zettlekasten knowledge management and note-taking system. It does away with folders within folders within folders which often hide what we want to find when we need to prepare materials for our students or just put interesting ideas together.  Obsidian (available at obsidian.md) is free for personal use and all the files remain on your computer.
The flex presentation is designed to offer some key knowledge management takeaways apart from the use of Obsidian itself. And if you're just curious about what's out there, come for an eye-opening hour."
12:00 PM - 1:50 PM Microaggressions: Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts
FLEX # 655
Microaggressions refer to the normalization of commonplace verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities (whether intentional or unintentional) that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative prejudicial slights and insults toward culturally marginalized groups. While microaggressions can be seen as innocent, harmless comments, they actually reinforce stereotypes and are a form of discrimination. This workshop will explore the varying types of microaggressions with examples and provide a methodology for addressing microaggressions. Participants will work through some scenarios to practice identifying and tackling microaggressions.
1:00 PM - 1:50 PM Accreditation: It's Everyone's Business
FLEX # 381.2
What is Accreditation and why should you care? The broadest most basic reason is that without accreditation, the degrees and certificates we confer would not count for anything and you wouldn't have your job! Obviously, you say, Accreditation is important for the college, but there are people working on it, so that's good enough. But it isn't. Because at the heart of it, Accreditation means writing an ISER, or Institutional Self Evaluation report. (Key word: Self-Evaluation). It's a rare opportunity to take a good look at ourselves and identify where improvements can be made and to celebrate all that we do well! It takes a large team to do the evaluation based on 4 standards, and we've been working on our ISER for a while now. The good news is: you're off the hook - we are not seeking volunteers as the bulk of the evaluating and writing has been done! But now is the time for your part; to get informed. Because you are an important part of the success of Butte College in meeting the standards of being an accredited college, you have an important role to play at this stage and that is to be informed! It's important to the whole process of renewing our accreditation that you are familiar with the standards and with our ISER. It's really true, Accreditation is Everybody's business!
1:00 PM - 2:20 PM Calculating Your Load
FLEX # 901.2
It is critical to understand how to calculate your academic load. This breakout will assist you in learning how to calculate your load and double check your overload contract. Do not rely on others or assume that no mistake will be made. Take control!!
