10:00 AM - 11:50 AM Time: An Obsession
FLEX # 105
Human beings are obsessed with time. We worry about losing time, having time, wasting time, saving time, and gaining time. Time, after all, is money. The very thought of wasting it is considered shameful. Time is so important to us nowadays that we measure it down to extremely small increments. The satellites orbiting Earth that bless us with GPS contain atomic clocks that lose no more than one second every one hundred million years. Web site unavailability is measured down to microseconds per day. So, understanding how clocks work seems like a good first step in grappling with our obsession. The first reliable mechanical clock, a pendulum clock, was designed in 1658 by the Dutch scientist Christian Huygens. This workshop will show what Huygens discovered about pendulums and the artistic legerdemain he brought to bear to make his device work. We’ll examine Englishman John Harrison’s exquisite work in developing a clock that could be used aboard a sailing ship, allowing sailors to know where they are anywhere on the globe. We’ll see how to build a clock, and we’ll learn how electronic clocks operate. There’s no time to waste!
