The Flex committee recognizes how important our social connections are and we want to offer you a space to catch up and start Fall 2021 on a positive note! This workshop will be more of a free flowing discussion where we can chat just as we would hustling to grab a snack before an on-campus Flex presentation.
10:00 AM - 11:50 AM CTA Benefits
FLEX # 901.1
CTA has a great deal of benefits that may well save your life. Come hear about all the great benefits available to you as a BCEA/CCA/CTA member. There are items that can assist your family if you are ill or have died and also ones to help you have fun with your family.
10:00 AM - 11:20 AM UndocuAlly Training

We will be exploring the concepts of race and erasure, and challenge our understanding of what it means to be undocumented in higher education. This is a Certificate Ally Training format to learn how to better and more appropriately serve undocumented students attending Butte College.

1:00 PM - 3:50 PM (Cancelled) Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Training
FLEX # 324.2
This is a great chance for everyone to refresh/recertify or receive their initial EEO Training. The training is good for two years, and the EEO Plan contemplates EEO Training prior to serving on a hiring committee. Again, this is a convenient way to stay ahead and be involved in upcoming hiring committees. We really encourage everyone to take advantage of this great opportunity.

CAS offers Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Critical Skills Workshops, the Critical Skills for College Success (1/2 unit) course and Academic Coaching all online! Participants will learn how students can access these services, and have the opportunity to participate in a mock, online tutoring session!
2:00 PM - 2:50 PM Debunking Neuromyths to Improve Education
FLEX # 103
Have you heard that you only use 10% of your brain? Or, male and female brains are designed for different types of skills? Or, students learn better when they received instruction in their preferred learning style? Each of these statements is widely believed and yet each is false. Belief in these and other neuromyths limits our ability to effectively instruct our students and constrains their educational potential. Educators rarely receive detailed instruction on learning and the brain, how to identify neuronmyths, and use evidence-based practices to structure better classes. In this Flex Days Workshop, we will cover common neuromyths, why they are myths, and what brain science has to say. A panel at the International Mind, Brain, and Education Society concluded that “teachers’ belief in neuromyths is one of the greatest barriers to improving education.” By debunking common neuromyths, we can improve our instruction and better serve our students.
3:00 PM - 4:20 PM Breaking Bread With The Dead
FLEX # 104
Bridging the gap between current concerns and what came before. Should we read old books that display racist and sexist views? In a new book, "Breaking Bread With The Dead," Alan Jacobs, Distinguished Professor of Humanities in the Honors Program at Baylor University, who has published in The Atlantic and The New Yorker, says yes. In this flex presentation we'll look at some of the surprising reasons why Jacobs says yes, and then discuss the difficult questions of how such books can be presented in the Butte College classroom--or whether such books should be part of a reading list at all. This is a time to share perspectives and approaches that help shape our understanding of the common good.
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM Developing Capable Young People
"You are significant," "you are capable," "you are needed." "you are important." These messages can truly change a youth's life for the better. Come and learn how to apply this model of parenting and influence your life as well.
