Event Description: FLEX # 104
Bridging the gap between current concerns and what came before. Should we read old books that display racist and sexist views? In a new book, "Breaking Bread With The Dead," Alan Jacobs, Distinguished Professor of Humanities in the Honors Program at Baylor University, who has published in The Atlantic and The New Yorker, says yes. In this flex presentation we'll look at some of the surprising reasons why Jacobs says yes, and then discuss the difficult questions of how such books can be presented in the Butte College classroom--or whether such books should be part of a reading list at all. This is a time to share perspectives and approaches that help shape our understanding of the common good. |
