9:30 AM - 10:45 AM Decolonize! "They Call Us Monsters Film Screening and Discussion"
They Call Us Monsters goes behind the walls of the Compound, a high security facility where Los Angeles houses its most violent juvenile criminals. To their advocates, they’re kids. To the system, they’re adults. To their victims, they’re monsters. The film follows three young offenders charged with serious crimes who sign up to take a screenwriting class with producer Gabe Cowan as they await their respective trials. As the boys work with Gabe on their screenplay, their complex stories are revealed. Everyone in attendance will explore whether they believe these kids have the capacity to change and return to society? What responsibility does society have to them, and also to their victims? What responsibility does Butte College have, as a community college and an institution of higher education, to formerly and currently incarcerated students?”

Presented by Julio Delgado and Alexander Sanchez
11:00 AM - 12:15 PM Decolonize! Keynote"Environmental Justice in Indian Country: Moving Toward a Transformational Land Ethic"
Highlighting major themes from my book "As Long As Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice from Colonization to Standing Rock," the talk discusses the role of traditional ecological knowledge and what decolonizing EJ needs to look like. It concludes by leaning into current work that includes how the settler state can move toward a more just and sustainable future.

Presented by Dina Gilio-Whitaker (Colville Confederated Tribes)

Questions will be randomly selected for discussion and presented anonymously. We are looking for honest race questions that can lead to true understanding and change when it comes to race and racism on campus.
