2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Diversity Speaker Series: Mateo Presente
Mateo de la Torre (he/him) is a transgender latino and abolitionist from Tijuana, Mexico. His work focuses on issues impacting transgender people of color and those with low-to-no income including sex worker’s rights, policing, and conditions of confinement in prisons and detention centers. Mateo has most recently served as Director of Policy and Advocacy at Black and Pink where he managed the only national coalition on LGBTQ Criminal Justice, and as Racial and Economic Justice Policy Advocate at the National Center for Transgender Equality. Throughout his advocacy he has organized national lobby days, published reports on TGNC interactions with law enforcement, co-drafted the first federal bill focused on the health and safety of sex workers, and headed up Latinx outreach and engagement for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during the Obama Administration.

Mateo is currently living through the pandemic in his home city of Tijuana where he is raising his cute puppy Charlie.

During this conversation, Mateo will share a brief recounting of his journey from being broke, unstably housed, and starting his transition, to graduating from Chico State, working in the Obama administration, and embarking on the liberatory work of abolition during the Trump years.

He will focus on sharing how his on-campus advocacy led him to the halls of Congress and the White House in defense of transgender rights; what he’s learned about the LGBTQ advocacy landscape, including why you don’t need to be a lawyer to be an advocate; and, perhaps most importantly, why abolition and transformative justice are foundational to his work.

He will share common challenges many TGNC BIPOC face in advocacy, strategies that have kept him hopeful while doing movement work as a trans person of color, and the guiding question he consistently revisits - What are you willing to lose for liberation?

FLEX # 675
This interactive workshop engages participants in ways to produce and circulate antiracist feedback in courses of all kinds that use or assign writing. The focus is on feedback to student writing that can be meaningful and productive by paying close attention to the habits of language and their politics that we all embody in some way. The workshop will cover developing dimension-based rubrics and the six main Habits of White Language that are usually invoked in feedback practices to students by teachers. Part of the workshop explains these language habits and how they become White language supremacy in classrooms. The second half of the workshop considers ways to address our language habits with students in equitable and socially just ways, such as engaging students in feedback practices that interrogate the politics of language and its judgement in classrooms. Participants are asked to bring a sample writing assignment of theirs and a sample paper with typical feedback of theirs from the assignment. Participants will leave with a handout of resources.

Asao B. Inoue is a professor and the associate dean for Academic Affairs, Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University. His research focuses on antiracist and social justice theory and practices in writing assessments. He is the 2019 Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and has been a past member of the CCCC Executive Committee, and the Executive Board of the Council of Writing Program Administrators.
