Come and commemorate U.S. Constitution Day and Citizenship Day with special guest Dr. Cal Jillson, Professor of Political Science at Southern Methodist University. The purpose of Constitution Day is to commemorate the creation and signing of the federal Constitution and to honor and celebrate the privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship for both native-born and naturalized citizens. Federal law requires that all schools receiving federal funds hold an educational program for their students each year. Pocket Constitutions will be available. Join us for a talk on the American dream as grounded in the Constitution, as well as breakfast coffee, juice and cookies!

Reidenberg dissect a sperm whale’s enormous organs to reveal the secrets of this 45-foot
deep-sea giant, which stranded and died on Pegwell Bay, Kent, England.

Deadline to submit 2013 CCCSFAAA Student Scholarship, sponsored by the California Community Colleges Student Financial Aid Administrators Association. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to the CCCSFAAA region of which Butte College is a part. We intend to nominate two Butte College students for the competition. Don’t miss this chance to apply.

into towering monuments, and raindrops form puddles that resemble vast oceans. |

Eco-poet and peace activist Brenda will present on Art and Activism at Butte College, at 12:30 p.m. on October 8 in the library’s Center for Excellence, 3536 Butte Campus Drive, Oroville.
The event is open to the public. She will later provide another lecture at 7:30 p.m. at the 1078 Gallery in Chico (location).
Hillman’s latest book in the tetralogy on earth, air, fire and water is titled Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire, which the Los Angeles Times just announced is nominated for the National Book Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the country.
Hillman was “One of the Fifty Most Inspiring Authors in the World” in 2010. She has published nine collections of poetry, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for her book, Bright Existence, and received the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Poetry for her book, Practical Water.
Hillman has received awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Society of America among others. She teaches at Saint Mary’s College where she is the director of the Masters in Fine Arts program. |

After a terrifyingly successful first year, The Butte College Associated Students will again transform the Butte College A.S. Chico Center Student Lounge into a frightening haunted house on October 30 and 31, 2013! This year’s theme, “A Very Wicked Wizard of Oz” will be filled with live actors, special effects, and eerie goblins and ghouls! A safe and sober Harvest Fair will also be hosted on Halloween night outside the Haunted House.
The event is free to Butte College students with a valid Activity Card, and a $2 donation per person is requested from the public. All proceeds will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club of the North Valley, Teen Program. This alcohol-free event is open to all community members, but is not recommended for children under 10 years old. The Butte College Associated Students are proud to offer our community a safe and sober way to celebrate Halloween.
This event is funded by the Butte College Associated Students Activity Fee. The Butte College Chico Center Student Lounge is located at 2320 Forest Avenue in Chico, next to Wittmeier Auto Center.

The Butte College Speech and Debate Team and the Butte College Associated Students will again host “Fireside Debates” during the month of November, 2013 at the Butte College main campus in the Campus Center Lounge. The event is designed to engage students in the debate process and create awareness around mental health. Audience participation is encouraged with a facilitated question and answer segment at the end of each debate. The Associated Students anticipate involvement from both students, faculty and administration from the college. This event series is free to students, faculty and staff and will include beverages and light snacks.
Debate Schedule:
November, 13th from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., “Laura’s Law”In November of 2004, Prop 63 “Laura’s Law” was passed. This proposition made it so the California court could order (force) a treatment of antipsychotic medications for the mentally ill in the best interest of public safety. The merits of this law will be debated.
November 19th from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., “Mental Health Screening”Should a mental health screening process be part of the college admissions process? The pros and cons of this idea will be debated.
This is the third round of Fireside Debates co-hosted by the Butte College Associated Students and Butte College Speech and Debate Team.

The Transfer Counseling Center will be offering CSU Applications Finishing Workshops. The workshops are designed to help students finish and submit their CSU application if they run into a problem with the application process. |

| A.S. Fireside Debates 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Main Campus
The Butte College Speech and Debate Team and the Butte College Associated Students will again host “Fireside Debates” during the month of November, 2013 at the Butte College main campus in the Campus Center Lounge. The event is designed to engage students in the debate process and create awareness around mental health. Audience participation is encouraged with a facilitated question and answer segment at the end of each debate. The Associated Students anticipate involvement from both students, faculty and administration from the college. This event series is free to students, faculty and staff and will include beverages and light snacks.
Debate Schedule:
November, 13th from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., “Laura’s Law”In November of 2004, Prop 63 “Laura’s Law” was passed. This proposition made it so the California court could order (force) a treatment of antipsychotic medications for the mentally ill in the best interest of public safety. The merits of this law will be debated.
November 19th from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., “Mental Health Screening”Should a mental health screening process be part of the college admissions process? The pros and cons of this idea will be debated.
This is the third round of Fireside Debates co-hosted by the Butte College Associated Students and Butte College Speech and Debate Team.

| NEW EXEMPT Students ~ SPRING 2014 Registration Begins All Day
NEW STUDENTS are students who have never applied to Butte College. Students who completed Butte College courses in high school and have since graduated are considered "new" students. EXEMPT STUDENTS are students exempt from assessment and orientation matriculation requirements. |
| Safety Trainings (GHS Requirement) 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Chico
Due to some changes in CA regulations regarding Hazard Communication Standards, Cal/ OSHA is requiring a retraining of ALL employees on the standards of hazard classifications, labels and safety data sheets.
All employees are required to be retrained by December 1, 2013. This is a requirement of all employees. Please make arrangements for the student assistants and temporary employees to attend one of the trainings listed above as they currently do not have login access to the Keenan Safe Colleges training website.
The required trainings are available on the Keenan Safe Colleges training website and all employees have been assigned the following required trainings:
• Hazard Communication Right to Understand (GHS) 26-minutes
• Safety Data Sheet (GHS) 19-minutes
In order to comply with this mandate, there are 2 different ways you can attend the required trainings.

A reception for the artists will take place 4:30-6:30 p.m. on November 21. |
