About the Book in Common
The Book in Common is a shared, community read, designed to promote discussion and understanding of important issues facing the broader community. The Book in Common is chosen each year by a group of university faculty and staff and community members. The 2019-2020 Book in Common is In Search of The Canary Tree, by Lauren E. Oakes.

“In Search of the Canary Tree is the story of the six years that Oakes spent studying…forests in the Alaskan wilds and the stories of the people connected to them. Having set out to bear witness to the death of a species, she and her team discovered unexpected resiliency, both in the forests themselves and in the new relationships that Alaskans were forging with nature—and each other—in a changing world. In the end, this book is an eloquent testimony to how the human and natural worlds can endure in the face of struggle and loss, and of how, in a time of despair, hope can stir anew.”
