11:00 AM - 12:15 PM Nelson Lauver: So Much More Than Able. Americans with Disabilities Triumph Every Day!
Until age 29, Nelson Lauver was functionally illiterate as a result of undiagnosed dyslexia. Now he is the inspirational author of the book, Most Unlikely to Succeed.
In this presentation Nelson helps us all get more comfortable with disabilities by sharing stories and insights about his own disability, his friends with disabilities, and other individuals today and throughout history who have not let their disability define them.
During this program you’ll not only get a new perspective on disabilities as you learn of those who’ve beaten the odds and recognized their potential - chances are you will also be able to identify and recognize elements of yourself in the stories – and reach a new realization of your own potential.

This event is co-sponsored by DSPS, Student Life, and Student Equity

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM Nelson Lauver: Faculty Workshop
Don't Give up on That Kid!
With continuous mandated curriculum changes and the intense pressure to transform our schools, today’s educators often feel overwhelmed, burned-out, and constricted in their passion to teach. Many even find themselves questioning why they chose to become a teacher in the first place. In this program Nelson helps teachers recharge, refocus, take stock in themselves and their commitment to their students. In Nelson’s enlightening, inspirational and humorous program, he recognizes the incredible importance of the teacher in the front of the classroom.
Through this presentation Nelson offers a unique “real world” glimpse into the mind and the gut of that “problem” kid, and proves that success can come from even the most unlikely student.  Nelson challenges his audience to become “the story”… the story that will be told by your students 10, 20, even 30 years from now of the teacher who reached out and opened their mind when no one else would or could
Until age 29, Nelson Lauver was functionally illiterate as a result of undiagnosed dyslexia. Now he is the inspirational author of the book, Most Unlikely to Succeed.
Main Campus
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Nelson Lauver: Ordinary Americans, Extrordinary Achievements
Until age 29, Nelson Lauver was functionally illiterate as a result of undiagnosed dyslexia. Now he is the inspirational author of the book, Most Unlikely to Succeed.
In this program Nelson tells his story and the stories of others as lesson plans for your life. He will help you understand how to get out of your own way (we often don’t even realize we are doing it), reframe adversity and failures to learn from them, understand how to deal with criticism and that little voice inside. He then gives you the inspiration to dig down and make it happen.

11:00 AM - 12:30 PM Gravitational Waves
FLEX # 164
Scientists at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in Washington announced on February 11th 2016 that they had discovered direct evidence of gravitational waves. They did so by imaging two colliding black holes situated more than one billion light years away from Earth. This discovery is monumental for our understanding of physics, gravity, and the large-scale behavior of the cosmos. Albert Einstein predicted the existence of such waves in 1916 when he presented his General Theory of Relativity to the world. Indirect evidence was first found in the 1970s by studying pulsars, but direct evidence has long eluded scientists because of the relative weakness of the gravitational force. The LIGO instrument has been in development for decades to get around this problem and yesterday’s announcement has finally proven its investment value of $1.1 billion. This workshop will give an overview of relativity, the structure of space and time, the nature of gravity waves and how one detects them, and what their existence portends for the future of cosmology and physics. It is geared toward the non-scientist; anyone interested in this important development and who wants to learn more about the mysteries of relativity and the cosmos is welcome.

8:00 AM - 3:30 PM WordSpring Conference
FLEX # 602.2

WordSpring is open to community members, educators, and high school and college students.
This year’s schedule brings award-winning novelist Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, who will read from her latest novel, Before We Visit the Goddess, on Friday, April 22nd for an evening reception. Our reception is free and open to the public with refreshments served and a no-host bar available at Roots Catering & Restaurant, 3221 Esplanade, Chico, at 7:30 p.m. Divakaruni will also lead a workshop at the conference on Saturday.
The workshop schedule also features poets Kiara Koenig, Sarah Pape, and Susan Wooldridge, novelist David Sundstrand and flash fiction writer Chella Courington, and songwriter Jeremy Gerrard, amongst many others. Last year’s conference attracted over 150 students, faculty and community members, and this year—our 5th anniversary—we anticipate an even greater turnout.
Workshops offer insights and ideas on the writing craft from those working in the field today. Our intimate setting provides opportunities for both novice and experienced writers to network with other writers and workshop leaders. As Chico State student Brite Cheney said of his experience, "WordSpring is an invaluable resource to anyone looking to improve or even get started writing."
Butte College student and writer Cale Castro adds, “A realm of possibility unfolds when an aspiring poet or storyteller seeks advice from like-hearted professionals. WordSpring allows aspiring writers to attain such advice in a familiar classroom environment.”
WordSpring is located at the Butte College main campus, set amidst a large and beautiful nature preserve. A light breakfast and buffet lunch are included in the registration cost – $65 for community members and $40 for students. The conference is sponsored by the Butte College English Department and is in part supported by donations, student equity funding, and Butte College Associated Students.
Visit buttewordspring.org for more information and to purchase tickets. Check WordSpring’s Facebook page for updates. Contact Professor Molly Emmons at wordspring@butte.edu or (530) 895-2935 with any questions.
