In this inclusive conversation, we'll talk about representations of HIV/AIDS in contemporary poetry. How have these social shifts, along with individual experiences of HIV, been represented in poems? What poetic techniques show up in this particular body of literature? What can we detect in these poems and what remains unknown? What influence might these poets have on us as creative thinkers in 2020? This event is for everyone—you don't need any prior background in creative writing or in the legacies of HIV. Bring your curiosity, your empathy, a notebook, and a pen. Free optional HIV testing afterward.

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM Gallery Reception Cassius Sonoquie

The Butte College Art Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by artist, Cassius Sonoquie.  This exhibition will be on display from January 28  – February 28, 2020, in the Butte College Art Gallery on the Main Campus. An artist’s closing reception and will take place on Thursday, February 27, 2020, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the gallery.

Cassius Sonoquie is a Butte College Arts student who is in the final phases of study in the painting and drawing program. Cassius was recently accepted into one of the most prominent Art Schools in the United States, Cooper Union in New York City. Cassius will begin this study in Fall 2020. This show illustrates a successful body of work from a developed student in our Arts Program.

The 2017- Present show is a collective of working ranging from small scale mixed media drawings to larger paintings in acrylic on canvas. The works investigate the human form, predominately as portraits.  Cassius identifies each piece in ambiguous dialogue, often illustrating the individual as androgynist.  The work is intimate and personal and hosts titles as, Self Portrait as Someone Else.

Please join us by coming together to celebrate Cassius Sonoquie and his success in the Butte College Art Gallery Thursday February 28, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Live music, food and refreshments will be served.  This event is free and open to the public.

The Butte College Art Gallery is located on the main Butte College campus, 3536 Campus Drive, in the new ARTS Building (ARTS 106) closest to parking lot 3. Gallery Hours: Monday & Wednesday 10 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. & Tuesday & Thursday 9 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. For more information, contact the Butte College Department of Art, Digital Art & Design, 530-895-2404.
