Isabella K. Saavedra is an artist and indigiqueer person (Pit River Madesi +
Salvadorenx) based in Portland, Oregon. Originally from Oroville, CA,
Saavedra attended Butte College before transferring to Southern Oregon
University to earn a B.S. in Art. After working at the Oregon Shakespeare
Festival as a props artisan, Saavedra moved to Portland and is now a studio
assistant at Marie Watt Studio. Saavedra’s practice is an amalgam of
painting, sculpture, and textiles that investigates personal history, ancestry,
daydream, and collective experiences. The selection of work on view is from
two ongoing series: Sardine Cans and Remnants. These series utilize found
and discarded materials and record the artist’s “NOW-isms”

Presenter Nzingha Dugas is the Executive Director of the Umoja Community Education Foundation (UCEF). Mx. Dugas joined the Umoja Community in June 2019. UCEF operates 71 programs across California’s 116 community college system. Umoja programs focus on academic engagement, student leadership, professional development and matriculation success for African ancestry students. For counselors and faculty, Umoja supports training and cultural pedagogy in teaching and learning. Additionally, Mx. Dugas’s role includes leading the Foundation’s central office team, the northern and southern statewide region staff and overseeing all operations.
