3:00 PM - 4:30 PM (Cancelled) Speaking up about the "other" basic skill: Oral Communication
FLEX #39.01
“Soft skills” such as oral communication are in demand in today’s workplace and yet, multiple studies report there is a disconnect between what employers want, what colleges deliver and what skills students think they need to be successful. IN this workshop join Stacey Bartlett for a lively and perhaps entertaining session based on research she recently conducted as part of an LTPA project. Further informed by the CMST Program Learning Outcome two year assessment – a project that assessed students’ motivational factors involved in communication competency (which includes the negative dimension – speech anxiety and the positive dimension – willingness to communicate), participants may gain insight into current pedagogical/adragogical practices that present the potential to disenfranchise students from learning experiences or hinder outcomes and achievement. Who would benefit from attending this workshop? Faculty who require oral presentations (but are NOT CMST faculty). Faculty who see a growing disconnect with students and social skills and want to do something about it! Administrators, staff, and students interested in learning more about the “other” basic skill. Plus anyone who wants to be hit with a piece of flying chocolate should definitely attend!
