2:00 PM - 4:30 PM | Film: If These Halls Could Talk FLEX #610.
Film and Discussion led by cast member and former Butte College Sociology Instructor, Julie Withers and cast member and former AS Officer, Joe Rogers.
During the hot summer of 2010, Director Lee Mun Wah brought together eleven college students to discuss what it is like on campuses across the country today. The students shared the frustration and anguish of trying to be understood and acknowledged on campus where the faculty and students are predominantly white. Their stories are starkly emotional and raw, filled with incredible tenderness, courage and pain. The issues that they challenge us to look at are equally provocative, begging to be heard and confronted.
If you have ever wondered why our students and faculty of color are leaving our campuses, if you have difficulties understanding students from other cultures, if you don’t know what to say or do when a conflict occurs as it relates to a diversity issue, then the film, If These Halls Could Talk will help model for you what it will take to have conversations on diversity that are both authentic and life-changing. This film will provide a glimpse into what is still missing and what is needed if we are ever going to come together in our classrooms, on our campuses and in our communities.

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM | Butte College Drama Department Presents 'The Three Penny Opera!" Mack the Knife is back in town! Butte Community College Drama Department will present Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s “The Threepenny Opera” November 12 to 16 in The Black Box Theatre of the Arts Building.
First performed in Berlin in 1928, this revolutionary piece of musical theatre was adapted from English dramatist John Gray’s 18th century piece, “The Beggar’s Opera”, a dark satire of “respectable” society; it initially was to rouse theatregoers into political awareness and action.
The setting is Victorian London with in the ‘steam punk’ fashion, with a nine piece orchestra! “The Threepenny Opera” is one of the authentic contemporary musical masterpieces full of beauty, humor and compassion. The thieving Mackie through the depths of Soho and witness how his crimes, lies and womanizing lead to his arrest. Only the miracle that can come from a musical can save his life, and bring a conclusion to what should be a sorrowful end. Its commentary on human beings with scathing songs with the blasted fusion of jazz like The Ballad of Mack the Knife, Pirate Jenny, and Tango Ballad.
Admission is $15 general public, and $10 students and seniors, add $2 at the door. Performances are at 7:30pm November 12 to 15, and at 2:00pm November 16. Tickets are available at the Butte College Bookstore and online. | |

9:00 AM - 4:00 PM | ATC Training - Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings Butte College is hosting a presentation of the ATC-20 material on the Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings. It follows the chapter order of the 1989 ATC-20 report, Procedures for Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings (and the 1995 ATC-20-2 report, Addendum to the ATC-20 Postearthquake Building Safety Evaluation Procedures), and the condensed, pocket-sized version, the ATC-20-1 Field Manual. There is an added section on structural basics. It provides examples which allow attendees to evaluate building damage conditions, assess the overall risk from the damage, and recommend which of the three placards in the ATC-20-2 Addendum should be posted on the building. Further case studies illustrating the rapid evaluation techniques are found in the 1996 ATC-20-3 report, Case Studies in Rapid Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings.
The presenter, Bob Bruce is experienced in evaluating buildings after earthquakes, and has full knowledge of the ATC-20 methods.
The training will be held at the Butte College Skyway Center, 2480 Notre Dame Blvd., Chico, CA 95928. | Chico |
