9:00 AM - 9:50 AM Dialog Days: Translation Station
FLEX # 157.1
What does it mean to “think critically”? Do you “communicate competently”? How do you “engage collaboratively” with colleagues? Are you “working effectively”? Want the answers? Come to Dialog Days!
9:00 AM - 10:50 AM Positron Emission Tomography (PET): Detecting Cancer Early
FLEX # 158
Fifty years ago, a cancer diagnosis was very often a death sentence for the patient because the primitive detection techniques then in use simply couldn’t find cancer until it was too late. Today, many cancers are detectable very early on using quite sophisticated techniques. One of the most versatile is called Positron Emission Tomography (PET). This technique uses a particular anti-matter radioactive decay mode to detect the presence of very small cancer clusters. It is being used successfully to detect brain, cervix, prostate, lung, and thyroid cancers as well as colorectal, pancreatic, lymphatic, and melanoma tumors. It is even being used to examine heart tissue to assess damage from coronary artery disease and it can image the brain to track the progression of ailments like Alzheimer’s disease. This workshop will give an overview of PET physics and the technology used to provide physicians with informative images. We’ll examine the radiation dose a patient typically receives, how the radioactive isotopes are prepared in a medical center, and how the body’s metabolic processes facilitate their use. We will also examine what the future holds for this amazing and painless technique. Who knows…given the prevalence of cancer and our increasingly long life spans, this workshop might provide a glimpse into your personal medical future. No background is needed.
9:00 AM - 11:50 AM Safe Zone I
FLEX # 657
The Safe Zone training at Butte is a 3-hour introductory training that invites participants to learn about LGBTQ+ issues, provide resources, and create a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff exploring issues of sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression. Your Safe Zone certification expires every two years. This is because terminology and queer culture changes and also because we're all learning. We can always use updating and practice! Join us.
10:00 AM - 10:50 AM Dialog Days: Measuring Spoons
FLEX # 157.2
If you come to Measuring Spoons, your future assessments will take the cake! Join our dialog about the pros and cons of different assessment types. Are you assessing what you think you are assessing? Are there hidden biases inherent in different types of assessments? Walk away with the recipe for assessment success. Just some food for
thought.
10:00 AM - 11:20 AM Part-time Faculty Association (PFA) Meeting
FLEX # 18
Join Part-Time Faculty Association President and get an update on all the PFA issues.
10:00 AM - 11:20 AM (Cancelled) Tour of Athletic Facilities & Athlete Study Hall

FLEX # 188
What does learning look like across disciplines? Join us for a discussion with faculty from across campus! Questions we will discuss: Are there overlaps in our outcomes? Do we use similar types of assessments? What are some common challenges we face?
11:00 AM - 11:50 AM The Science of Meditation
FLEX # 554
Is meditation worth the hype? What does it do, and how does it do it? Can it change how we think and perceive? Why is it hard to meditate, can you get past that, and is it worth it to try? We'll explore these questions and bring yours along too. We will also experience the "Wheel of Awareness" meditation by Dr. Dan Siegel, UCLA School of
Medicine.
11:30 AM - 12:50 PM (Cancelled) Recruiting the Butte Baseball Player
FLEX # 160
A behind the scenes look into the recruiting of a student athlete into the Butte College baseball program.
11:30 AM - 12:50 PM Understanding the Size of Things by Using Scale
FLEX # 161
How big is the Universe? How much is 4.3 trillion dollars? How big is an atom? How much energy does the Sun produce? We need to understand scale to navigate a world where big numbers and large concepts are involved in many critical topics. Taking something that seems esoteric and making it relatable to our everyday experiences is a powerful tool. In this workshop, we will look at different techniques to grasp the seemingly ungraspable and expand our minds so we can understand the grand scale of nature’s wonders.
